Toilets & Bathrooms

Old style toilets are still very common in Japan, even in new buildings. Many Japanese people prefer them, because they avoid direct contact between the body and the toilet. They are used by squatting with one foot on either side of the pan. Make sure that you face in the direction of the raised part of the pan, and that your body is over the hole rather than over the pan itself.

Modern style toilets are often referred to as “washlets” or “shower toilets” in Japan, because they have built in bidets. They have a spray that washes you (if you so desire) and sometimes a dryer that can dry you afterwards. The seats are usually heated in winter.

The electronic control panels on these toilets can be intimidating and it is best not to touch them unless you know how they work. (Imagine turning the toilet into a water fountain!!) The good news is that the toilets usually have a manual flushing lever on the right hand side of the cistern or at the back of the seat - and you can flush with that. It is the safest option!
